Melaka - Historical City
Melaka is a famous historic port strategically located on the Straits of Malacca. It was founded by a Sumatran Prince named Parameswara and thereafter flourished under the Melaka Sultanate.
The city of Melaka is divided into the new and old sections. The older part of the city is fairly compact and has many historical and cultural attractions tucked into the nooks and crannies of its narrow streets.
Old buildings and traditional trades and crafts make this one of Malaysia’s most visited destinations. Buildings reflect Portuguese, Dutch and British influences and the city centre is ideal for walking around. Historical places include the Stadthuys, Christ Church, St. Paul’s Church and the A’ Famosa fortress built by the Portuguese in 1511.
Much of the remnants of Melaka's glorious past lie within the Town Square and waterfront area near the river.The state was known as the Venice of the East when it was the centre of spice trade in the region. Turn down any street in its historic heart to discover something fascinating.

The new section of Melaka lies across the Melaka River and is mostly built on land reclaimed from the sea. It consists of modern shopping centres like the Mahkota Parade and is a bustling food and entertainment district.
Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker’s Street) is home to antique stores, galleries and souvenir shops. For something different, take a ride in a colorful trishaw around Melaka.
Outside Melaka town, there are some nice beaches, two excellent offshore islands with resorts and a golf course. The Air Keroh district is close to the North-South Expressway and has many recreational theme parks. Ayer Keroh, 15km from town offers attractions like Zoo Melaka, Melaka Crocodile Park and Mini Malaysia.
