LAKE KENYIR 肯逸湖

 

 

Kenyir Lake is reputed to be one of the largest and most fascinating man-made lakes in the Southeast Asia. Covering an area of 209,199 hectares, it is also Malaysia's largest rock-filled hydroelectric dam with a wonderful assortment of 340 islands with waterfalls, rivers and rapids. The lake is surrounded by a lush tropical rainforest, a popular retreat for nature lovers, bird watchers, anglers, photo enthusiasts and fun seekers.

 

The rainforest that cradles the area bestows the lake with an incredible assortment of flora and fauna including rare ferns, exotic orchids, hornbills, elephants, and panthers. It is believed that the area is the home to more than 8,000 species of flowers, 2,500 species of plants and trees, 800 species of orchids, 300 species of fungus and hundreds of freshwater fish species such as Baung, Toman, Kelisa, Lampam and Kelah. Tasik Kenyir is located about 55 km inland from Kuala Terengganu with Pengkalan Gawi jetty has as its gateway. Houseboats and speed boat services for island trips and resort transfers are available here. Tasik Kenyir is also a gateway to Taman Negara through Tanjung Mentong. Accommodation varies from a 3 star resort, chalets on the islands, floating resort or houseboats where rooms and meals are provided. The houseboat travels to waterfalls and fishing sites proving an exhilarating adventure for nature lovers.

 

Kenyir Lake is approximately 55 km from Kuala Terengganu. Gawi Jetty is the main gateway to the lake. Tourist Information Centre, resting area, toilets, prayer’s room and ample parking space are available at Pengkalan Gawi.
